7. LONDON, St. George the Martyr, Southwark (Surrey). Here John Wingfield, York Herald, father of Thomas Wingfield of York River, Virginia (1680s) was buried in 1678, having died “a prisoner at the King’s Bench” – clearly for debt. The entry can be seen in the Burial Register, which is kept in the church safe. To see this, one must book through St. George’s Rectory, Tabard Gardens, London SE1 1JP.
