24. LLANDYSILIO (near Dyfed).
There is a fine stained glass window
here honoring Major Walter C. Wingfield (of the Shropshire-Rhysnant, Dyfed
line), the inventor, patentor [1874, Patent #685], marketer and father of
lawn tennis. This can be seen on page 118, 120 and 169 of George E.
Alexander’s Wingfield: Edwardian Gentleman” [Portsmouth, NH, 1986].
Walter, son of Captain Clopton Wingfield and his wife, Jane, was christened
at nearby St.Mary’s (Ruabon Parish) on November 1st, 1833
[#719], by his grandfather, the Rev Rowland Wingfield.
